Why Should I Read More?

I have always enjoyed reading. I was not, however, one of those toddlers who barely know how to walk but will inevitably carry around a book as adults gush about how great a reader they are. I simply enjoyed books and I like reading. I will always confess to others that I am not a “great reader.” In which I mean, I cannot “devour” a book in a single night. I have never in my life stayed up until the wee hours of the morning to finish a book. I have to read consistently and sometimes even have to re-read passages to complete a book with confidence. If I happen to start a book, but a day or two passes before I can pick it back up, I promise I am not exaggerating when I say I have to re-read a few paragraphs to get caught back up. I share all this to say that I am not speaking from some lofty place of “I read 1,000 pages an hour! You can too!” No, not in the slightest. I can read about 10-20 pages an hour depending on the book, sometimes more, but not like some of these other folks. I think the amount or speed one reads is not the important thing, the important thing is to read books. I enjoy them so it’s a bit more straightforward for me, but even if you don’t consider yourself to be a “good reader” don’t not read. (throw some double negatives for you diligent learners ;) There are just too many good aspects to reading that can really enrich your life on multiple levels.
